Adoption Update

Adoption Featured Our Adoption Story

It’s been a busy few weeks in our adoption journey. About two and a half weeks ago, we thought we had an unofficial referral for a baby boy, pending a couple of medical tests. We were so excited and blown away by how fast things were happening. However, a couple days later, we found out we would not get the referral after all. There was some confusion with the babies home about an existing independent adoption underway for that baby that our agency wasn’t made aware of. All part of what we signed up for when we joined a pilot program in the early stages, but hard nonetheless. It’s so easy to fall in love with a baby and get your hopes up. But, we trust that God will bring us just the right baby at just the right time.

Within 5 mintues of getting the no-go phone call, my sister, Mindy, went into labor, and 40 minutes later, my nephew was born. Quite the whirlwind of emotions in our house. Baby, no baby, baby! Joel and I are now proud uncle and aunt to Baby Ben. He is so precious and fills our hearts with longing to meet our little one. It was so fun to watch my sister, her husband, and their daughters get to know the newest member of their family. Children truly are a blessing from the Lord.

Our program director tells us our wait for a referral shouldn’t be too long. We have filed our immigration paperwork with the USCIS, and are awaiting the corresponding fingerprinting appointment date. We expect to have approval in about 2-3 months according to the USCIS website. Meanwhile, we wait, and wait, and wait some more. Joel reminds me daily that we are closer than we’ve ever been with each passing day. God is at work even though we can’t see it.

In the meantime and in anticipation of our upcoming referral, Joel and I will begin fundraising in faith this month for our adoption. I will be participating in a 10K race in mid-November (Joel will be cheering me on from the sidelines, as he broke his foot last weekend and isn’t exactly in prime running condition), and we are planning several other fundraising events and promotions in the coming months.

To that end, we are excited to be working with Lifesong for Orphans, a 501c3 non-profit ministry that helps families finances their adoptions. We will be able to accept donations through Lifesong, thus enabling those of you who support us to make a tax-deductable contribution toward our adoption. If you would like to help us bring our baby home, you can make a contribution through our online fundraising page here.

Thank you for your continued prayers during this season of waiting expectantly.

Michael, thanks so much for the reminder and the prayers. It’s friends like you guys, who have already walked this road, that give us hope when the journey, like you said, seems like it will go on forever! Blessings to you, Allison, and the kiddos.

It’s pretty cool to be called to something so special as adoption, but yes, the waiting game is challenging! I told Michael to come by for dinner next time he and the family are in town. Maybe we should all try to connect and provide support for the journey. Michael was a tremendous encourager for me when we talked at Catalyst. We get so excited about getting our baby girl, but then we have to patiently wait for God to lay out the full plan. We are very excited for you guys and enjoy following your journey!

Ryan, what a great idea! Michael and have been friends since we were in 9th grade, if you can believe it. We’re so thankful to have the encouragement of their journey to encourage us too. We would love to get together sometime. Just let us know. Thanks for the reminder that God is unfolding his perfect–and full-plan. We’re praying for you guys!

Thank you for allowing all of us to be part of your journey. For living it honestly and vulnerably and with grace. Praying for you and Joel and the kids…and for that precious little one…born or unborn…in the in-between. Love you.
