Going Back to Basics
Life has happened at the Miller house over the last year or so. Once upon a time, Joel and I were running half marathons, fit as fiddles. Now, not so much. This has been the most intense season of life, in ways both good and bad. As a result, neither of us have felt like we had time to tend to our health or pursue a more balanced life. Consequently, little things like, oh, sleep, and walking around the block from time to time have fallen by the wayside. But it’s a new day in Millerville.
It ocurred to us a couple days ago that we have been doing the exact opposite of what we have done with our money. Unlike our finances, we are living beyond our means physically. If we don’t make some changes, we will continue on a road bound for a crash. Of what kind, no one can be sure, but it’s not going to be pretty, that we know. (more…)

Weekly Meal Planning Made Easy: 5 Success Strategies
Do find yourself staring blankly inside your fridge at 5 p.m. each night, wondering what in the world you’re going to make for dinner? This has happened to all of us more times than we can count. We know intuitively that we need a plan if we are going to eat together as a family and stay on a reasonable grocery budget, yet many of us feel paralyzed when we think about making one.
As we’ve gotten back in to the school routine, I’ve been more vigilant about approaching mealtimes with a strategy. Every Saturday morning, I sit down and plan my meals for the week, making a corresponding grocery list. The menu goes on post-it notes up on the calendar on our fridge. This way, I know exactly what we’re having each day. Here are a few things that help me succeed:

The Homework Box: a solution for doing homework on the go
Maybe it’s a sign of our times, but much of our life happens in the car. We drive about 45-60 minutes to school each way, depending on traffic, so there is a lot of time that needs redeeming. All this time in the car cuts down on our family time and playtime at home, so we make the most of drive in every way we can.
This week, I decided to try having the kids do most of their homework in the car. They are in 2nd and 3rd grades, so they typically have about half an hour of homework each day—a reasonable amount to complete on the way home from school. In the past, I’ve tried this, but found we didn’t have the necessary supplies, like crayons or scissors, to complete an assignment. Or, when they need to practice writing, we might not have a good surface or the proper paper to do it on.

The Benefits of Eating Together as a Family
Psychologist, pastors, and doctors agree—the family meal is one the most important things you can do to raise physically and emotionally healthy kids. In fact, children who eat dinner at home with their families have lower rates of substance abuse and obesity, do better in school, and feel more connected to their parents.
Since my husband Joel already had children when we got married, we became an instant family. Right away, we decided family dinner would be a top priority. As the kids get older, it seems the list of things vying for this hour of the day never ends, but our commitment to eat together has remained strong. (more…)
