Get this done
With my donut in hand, I walked up to a group of friends casually chatting during coffee hour after church on Sunday. One of the men in the group stopped and said to me, “Oh, we got your letter in the mail. We have a check coming for you. We’re going to help you get this [adoption] done.”
We are going to help you get this done—the essence of community in action. Like an old-fashioned barn raising, our friend knew that if everyone got together and pitched in, we could get somewhere none of us could go on our own.
It has been an amazing week since we announced that we needed to raise more money to bring our boys, Moses and Jonah, home from Uganda. We have raised nearly $1,000 since then. So many humbling gifts encouraging our hearts. We are off to a great start with about $8,200 left between us and our boys.
Truthfully, I struggled for weeks about fundraising again. I didn’t want to do it. But there wasn’t another option.
As Joel and I sat at the kitchen table folding fundraising letters and stuffing envelopes, I expressed my hesitation, “Don’t you think people are going to say, ‘They ought to be able to pay for this on their own. Why are they asking us to help AGAIN!’”
Joel handed me one of our letters and pointed to the pictures of our boys at the top. He said, “Sure, people might say that, but look at those faces. They’re counting on us. We have to do it for them regardless of what anyone thinks.”
God was asking me to trust that he would provide. My job was simply to obey by asking—in spite of my fear that people wouldn’t step up and in spite of the embarrassment I felt to fundraise again.
Our friend at church reminded me that God is in this. He is the one who called us to adopt in the first place, not the other way around. And, he is calling others to “help us get this done.”
Our story is about the larger family of God coming alongside our little family, enabling us to love two boys who have no one. With your help, we can give them a family.

Love your vulnerability and honesty. It takes great humility, courage and strength to ask for help – something I have had to learn the hard way MANY times!! =)

That barn raising picture is so appropriate! We must humble ourselves to allow others into our lives and help us in all situations. It is difficult but you and Joel set a wonderful example!
