Our Dossier Is Off!

Our Adoption Story

Dossier Documents

Last week, we got the exciting news that the affidavit we had been waiting on was finally in hand. In it, every document we needed to send to our attorney for our dossier was outlined in specific detail.

A dossier is the collection of documents that one sends to a country (including a home study, medical reports, copies of passports, etc.) that an attorney then uses to file for court. Each page had to be labeled in a specific way and arranged in proper order for the courts.

Each country is different, but in our case, I need one complete set of documents with original notary seals plus five copies for each of our boys. That translates into more notarizations than I can count, nearly 400 pages and over 5 pounds of paper (sorry trees!).

Dossier Documents

It was actually about 800 pages, because I put it together incorrectly the first time and had to redo it on Monday and send it again. Oy vey! Let’s not even talk about how much I paid FedEx in the last 7 days between copies and shipping. Truth be told, there isn’t anything I’d rather spend several hundred dollars on. These papers are the final step stateside between us and our boys.

Once the documents arrive in Uganda, our attorney will do her part to prepare them and then she will file for our court date.

While we aren’t sure when we will receive our date, once we do we will likely be on a plane quickly. Often, families are required to appear in court 1-3 weeks after the day they are notified, and sometimes even sooner.

We are busy getting all our ducks in a row in order to be ready when the call comes. Even though there is a bit more waiting ahead, we are getting so close. I can feel it.

Will you continue to pray that God would make a way for our court date and travel to fall into place quickly? We want to get these little guys home to their family.

I’ll never forget the day our dossier was sent off. With all the waiting involved in adoption, sending off the dossier is such a feeling of accomplishment and progress. I’m excited for you!

(Re: FedEx … one of our favorite pictures from the adoption process is our FedEx delivery rep coming to our house with our referral. He was so happy to pose for that picture with us)
